1 Why This Recipe Matters
Cast Screws recipe is the early-game champion and Stitched Iron Plate eliminates screws for Reinforced Iron Plates, there comes a point in every factory's life where massive quantities of screws are simply unavoidable. Heavy Modular Frames, Turbo Motors, and numerous Tier 7-8 products still require screws in staggering quantities. While the Cast Screws recipe is the early-game champion and Stitched Iron Plate eliminates screws for Reinforced Iron Plates, there comes a point in every factory's life where massive quantities of screws are simply unavoidable. Heavy Modular Frames, Turbo Motors, and numerous Tier 7-8 products still require screws in staggering quantities. When that time comes, Steel Screw is the answer.
Production Efficiency Gain
A single Constructor running the Steel Screw recipe consumes 5 Steel Beams per minute and produces 260 Screws per minute. Let that number sink in: 260 screws. From ONE machine. The default screw recipe produces 15 screws per minute from 15 Iron Rods. Cast Screws produces 50 screws per minute from 12.5 Iron Ingots. Steel Screw produces 260 screws per minute from 5 Steel Beams. The output-per-machine ratio is staggering — one Steel Screw Constructor equals 5.2 Cast Screw Constructors or 17.3 default Screw Constructors.
The trade-off is that Steel Beams require a more complex production chain than Iron Ingots. To make Steel Beams, you need Iron Ore, Coal, and Limestone to produce Steel Ingots in a Foundry, then convert those Ingots into Steel Beams in a Constructor. However, by Tier 4, you are already producing Steel Beams for Modular Frames, Encased Industrial Beams, and numerous other products. Adding a tap for Steel Screw production is trivial once your steel infrastructure is established.
When to Unlock
Steel Screw becomes available once you reach Tier 3-4 and unlock Steel Production. The Foundry is the key building here — it becomes available at Tier 3 with the Basic Steel Production milestone. However, the Steel Screw alternate recipe itself comes from Hard Drives found in biomes that typically require Tier 3-4 equipment to reach safely.
The ideal timing is after you have established your first steel production line but before you start scaling up Heavy Modular Frame or Motor production. Once you see your screw demand exceeding 200-300 per minute, it's time to transition from Cast Screws to Steel Screws. The transition is straightforward: simply divert some Steel Beams from your existing production into Screw Constructors. No need to rebuild your entire screw factory from scratch.

Steel Screw uses 66% less Iron Ore than Cast Screws for the same output!
Steel Beam Diversion Strategy
The most efficient way to implement Steel Screws is to tap into your existing Steel Beam production. Most Tier 4+ factories have a Steel Beam Constructor (or several) already running for Modular Frames and Encased Industrial Beams. A single Steel Beam Constructor at 100% produces 7.5 Beams per minute. If you divert 5 Beams to a Steel Screw Constructor, you get 260 Screws per minute while still keeping 2.5 Beams for other uses. This 'tap' approach requires zero new upstream infrastructure — just one additional Constructor placed next to your beam line.
3 Hard Drive Acquisition
The Steel Screw alternate recipe is obtained by researching Hard Drives in the MAM. Hard Drives are physical items found at Crash Sites scattered across the map. The Steel Screw recipe appears in the Tier 3-4 alternate recipe pool, meaning it can be obtained from Crash Sites in mid-game biomes such as the Northern Forest, Dune Desert edges, and the areas surrounding the Rocky Desert.

Recipe Pool Information
The Steel Screw recipe is part of the Tier 3-4 alternate recipe pool. This pool also includes: Solid Steel Ingot, Steel Rotor, Encased Industrial Pipe, Stator (alternate), Modular Frame (alternate), and several others. With approximately 15-20 recipes in this pool, your odds of seeing Steel Screw on any given Hard Drive are roughly 1 in 5 to 1 in 7. Save scumming is effective and recommended if you're specifically targeting this recipe.
If you have already unlocked several Tier 3-4 recipes, the pool shrinks and your odds improve. For example, if you've unlocked 5 of the 20 recipes, your next Hard Drive has a 1-in-15 chance of offering Steel Screw. Consider gathering multiple Hard Drives before researching any of them to maximize your odds through pool shrinking.
4 Unlock Strategy
MAM Research Requirements
Before you can research Hard Drives for Steel Screw, you need the MAM built and Steel Production unlocked. Here's the complete unlock path:
↓ HUB Tier 3: Unlock Basic Steel Production + Foundry
↓ Build Foundry (costs: 10 Modular Frames, 10 Rotors, 20 Concrete)
↓ Establish Steel Production (Iron + Coal + Limestone)
↓ Build MAM (if not already built)
↓ Research Hard Drive from Tier 3-4 biome → Select Steel Screw from 3 options
Prerequisites Checklist
| Requirement | How to Obtain | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|
| HUB Tier 3 | Deliver required parts to HUB | 5-10 hours |
| Foundry Building | Unlocked at Tier 3 Basic Steel Production | Immediate after Tier 3 |
| Steel Production Running | Build Foundry on Iron + Coal + Limestone | 1-2 hours |
| MAM | Craft in Build Gun after Tier 1 | Already built |
| Hard Drive (Tier 3-4 pool) | Loot from Northern Forest or Desert Crash Sites | 30-90 minutes |
Tier Requirements
Steel Screw requires Tier 3-4 specifically because it depends on Steel Beams, which in turn require the Foundry building unlocked at Tier 3. While the recipe itself is not tier-locked in the MAM, the resources and buildings needed to use it are only available from Tier 3 onward. Most pioneers naturally transition to Steel Screw around Tier 4 when their screw demands start scaling beyond what Cast Screws can comfortably provide.
Recommended Production Chain
For a complete Steel Screw production line producing 260 Screws per minute:
- 1x Normal Iron Node (60 ore/min) + 1x Normal Coal Node (60 coal/min) + 1x Normal Limestone Node
- 1x Foundry: 30 Iron Ore + 30 Coal + 15 Limestone → 30 Steel Ingot/min
- 1x Constructor (Steel Beam): 15 Steel Ingot → 7.5 Steel Beam/min
- 1x Constructor (Steel Screw): 5 Steel Beam → 260 Screw/min
- Surplus: 2.5 Steel Beam/min for other uses
5 Gotcha Tips
The most common mistake pioneers make is building a massive Cast Screw factory at Tier 1-2, then being reluctant to switch to Steel Screws at Tier 4 because they've invested so much. Cast Screws is a stepping stone, not a destination. Build just enough to meet your Tier 1-3 needs (roughly 100-200 screws per minute), then plan the Steel Screw transition. The machine count savings alone — going from 4-5 Cast Screw Constructors to 1 Steel Screw Constructor — justifies the switch.
At 260 screws per minute from a single Constructor, you CANNOT use a Mk.1 belt (60 items/min) or Mk.2 belt (120 items/min). You need at least a Mk.3 belt (270 items/min) to handle the output. If you haven't unlocked Mk.3 belts yet (Tier 4), you'll need to split the output across three Mk.2 belts or use a splitter to distribute the screws to multiple destinations immediately. Plan your belt infrastructure before placing the Constructor.
One Steel Screw Constructor consumes 5 Steel Beams per minute. A single Steel Beam Constructor produces only 7.5 Beams per minute. This means one Beam Constructor can feed only 1.5 Screw Constructors. If you're running two Steel Screw Constructors (520 screws/min), you need two Steel Beam Constructors dedicated to screw production. Factor this into your overall steel production planning to avoid starving your Modular Frame or Encased Industrial Beam lines.
While one Steel Screw Constructor only draws 4 MW (same as any Constructor), the upstream steel production is power-hungry. A Foundry draws 16 MW, and the Steel Beam Constructor draws 4 MW. The total power for a full 260-screw-per-minute chain is approximately 24 MW, not counting miners. For two Screw Constructors (520/min), you're looking at 44+ MW just for the screw portion. Make sure your power grid has headroom before scaling up.
