1 Why This Recipe Matters
The Heavy Encased Frame alternate recipe is widely considered the single best alternate recipe in all of Satisfactory. It completely redefines how you produce Modular Frames — one of the most important mid-to-late game components used in everything from conveyor belts to fuel generators to nuclear power plants. If you only hunt for one alternate recipe in your entire playthrough, make it this one.
Production Efficiency Gain
The default Modular Frame recipe requires a complex chain: Steel Pipes from Steel Ingots, Reinforced Iron Plates from Iron Plates and Screws, and then combining them in a Manufacturer. The biggest bottleneck has always been screws — a Manufacturer producing Modular Frames consumes 60 screws per minute, which requires multiple dedicated screw production lines running at full capacity. This creates a logistical nightmare of belt routing, especially when you're trying to produce 10+ Modular Frames per minute for large-scale projects.
Heavy Encased Frame eliminates screws entirely from the equation. Instead, it adds Concrete — one of the cheapest and most abundant materials in the game, produced from Limestone which exists in massive quantities across every biome. The result is a dramatically simplified supply chain with 40% more output per Manufacturer. Your factory floor goes from a spaghetti mess of screw belts to clean, organized lines of Steel, Concrete, and Reinforced Iron Plates.
When to Unlock
Heavy Encased Frame becomes available at Tier 5-6, which is when you unlock the Manufacturer building itself. This timing is perfect — just as Modular Frame demand ramps up for Conveyor Belt Mk.4, Fuel Generators, and the first phase of nuclear setup, you get access to the recipe that makes frame production actually manageable. The earliest you can realistically obtain this recipe is shortly after completing the Tier 5 HUB upgrade.
We strongly recommend making this your first Hard Drive hunt after reaching Tier 5. The time investment required to find the Crash Sites in the Northern Forest is substantial — you'll need healing items, a weapon, and preferably a vehicle — but the payoff is transformative. Once you have Heavy Encased Frame, your entire factory design philosophy changes. You stop thinking 'how do I route all these screws?' and start thinking 'how big can I make this?'

Scaling Comparison: 50 Modular Frames Per Minute
Let's look at what it takes to produce 50 Modular Frames per minute — a common mid-to-late game target for large factory builds. With the default recipe, you need approximately 12.5 Manufacturers, each consuming 60 screws per minute, for a total screw demand of 750 screws per minute. That's 15 Constructors running Cast Screws at full capacity, just for screws. With Heavy Encased Frame, you need only about 8.9 Manufacturers, consuming zero screws. The difference in factory space, power consumption, and logistics complexity is staggering.
Pairing with Other Recipes
Heavy Encased Frame reaches its full potential when combined with other alternate recipes. The ideal synergy chain is: Stitched Iron Plate (eliminates screws from Reinforced Iron Plates) combined with Heavy Encased Frame (eliminates screws from Modular Frames) = a completely screw-free Modular Frame production line. Add Cast Screws or Steel Screw for any remaining screw needs elsewhere in your factory, and you have an incredibly efficient mid-game setup.
3 Hard Drive Acquisition
The Heavy Encased Frame recipe comes from the Tier 5-6 alternate recipe pool. This pool is only accessible from Crash Sites located in mid-to-late game biomes. The Northern Forest is the primary biome for hunting this recipe, with several Crash Sites that draw from the correct pool. Unlike the early-game pools, Tier 5-6 Crash Sites are often guarded by hostile creatures and may require significant preparation to reach safely.

Recipe Pool: Tier 5-6
The Tier 5-6 alternate recipe pool contains some of the most powerful recipes in the game. When you research a Hard Drive from the Northern Forest or Titan Forest, the MAM will present three random options from this pool. Other recipes in the same pool include: Heavy Encased Frame, Recycled Plastic, Recycled Rubber, Turbo Fuel, Compacted Coal, and several Pure Ingot variants. Because every recipe in this pool is excellent, you literally cannot make a bad choice — but Heavy Encased Frame is still the crown jewel.
If you see Heavy Encased Frame alongside other great recipes like Recycled Plastic or Pure Iron Ingot, PICK Heavy Encased Frame first. You can always come back for the others. The screw elimination is that important — it fundamentally changes your factory design for the rest of the game. Every other recipe in the pool is a 'nice to have' compared to Heavy Encased Frame's 'must have' status.
4 Unlock Strategy
MAM Research Requirements
The MAM is required for all Hard Drive research and should already be built by the time you reach Tier 5. If you haven't built it yet, the requirements are the same as Tier 1: 5 Reinforced Iron Plates, 15 Cables, and 40 Wires. The research time for Tier 5-6 Hard Drives is 25 minutes per drive — longer than early-game drives but well worth the wait.
↓ Build Manufacturer (costs: 10 Heavy Modular Frames + 50 Cables + 50 Plastic)
↓ Establish Oil production for Plastic + Fuel power
↓ Craft weapon + healing items for Northern Forest expedition
↓ Travel to Northern Forest Crash Sites (see locations above)
↓ Collect Hard Drive → Return to MAM → Insert and wait 25 min
↓ Select Heavy Encased Frame from 3 options
Prerequisites Checklist
| Requirement | Details | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|
| HUB Tier 5 | Oil Processing + Manufacturer unlocked | 8-15 hours (cumulative gameplay) |
| Manufacturer built | Requires Heavy Modular Frames, Cables, Plastic | 30 minutes |
| Weapon | Xeno-Basher or Xeno-Zapper minimum | Craft at Equipment Workshop |
| Healing items | 10-20 Medicinal Inhalers or Beryl Nuts | 15 minutes farming |
| Transportation | Tractor or Explorer vehicle strongly recommended | 1-2 hours to build + fuel |
| Foundations | 200-500 Concrete for path building | 30 minutes production |
Tier Requirements
Heavy Encased Frame requires Tier 5 for the Manufacturer building. Additionally, to fully utilize this recipe you'll want Tier 3 for Steel Production (Steel Pipes) and Tier 1 for Concrete (Limestone processing). By the time you reach Tier 5, you should already have all prerequisite technologies. The recipe itself can be used immediately after the MAM finishes researching the Hard Drive — no additional unlocks needed.
Expedition Strategy
The Northern Forest expedition is not a casual walk. We recommend the following approach: First, build a temporary vehicle station near the forest edge and fuel it up. Drive as far as terrain permits, then proceed on foot with foundations to create safe pathways. Place a radar tower or beacon at each Crash Site location so you can fast-travel back later. Bring more healing items than you think you need — the Northern Forest creatures hit harder than Grass Fields hostiles. If you have access to Nobelisk grenades, they are extremely effective against clustered enemies near Crash Sites.
5 Gotcha Tips
The Tier 5-6 pool has many desirable recipes. If Heavy Encased Frame doesn't appear in your first Hard Drive, you face a tough decision: take another excellent recipe (like Recycled Plastic) and hope the next drive gives you Heavy Encased Frame, or reload your save and try again. Our recommendation: if the other two options are mediocre (like a biomass recipe you don't need), reload. If one of them is also top-tier, take it and hunt for another Hard Drive. The pool shrinks as you unlock, so every other recipe you take improves your odds for Heavy Encased Frame on the next drive.
Heavy Encased Frame adds Concrete as a new input — 10 Concrete per minute per Manufacturer. While Concrete is cheap and Limestone is abundant, don't underestimate the scaling requirements. A factory producing 50 Modular Frames per minute needs approximately 89 Concrete per minute, which requires nearly 3 Constructors running full-time on Limestone. Make sure your Limestone node has enough purity and your Concrete production line is scaled accordingly. A Normal purity Limestone node with a Mk.2 miner can support about 8 Manufacturers worth of Concrete production.
The Manufacturer is a power-hungry building at 55 MW base consumption. Overclocking it to 150% or 200% dramatically increases power draw (following the exponential power curve: power multiplier = clock speed^1.321). For Heavy Encased Frame production, we recommend running multiple Manufacturers at 100% rather than overclocking fewer machines. This gives you better power efficiency and redundancy. If one Manufacturer goes down due to supply issues, the others keep producing. With overclocking, a single failure takes out a larger percentage of your production.
The Northern Forest has several fixed creature spawn points near Crash Sites. These aren't random — they will respawn every time you return to the area. After clearing a Crash Site, consider building a small platform with walls around it to prevent future respawns from interfering. Alternatively, place a beacon and use the map to plan quick in-and-out trips. The creatures don't respawn instantly, so you have a window of safety after each clearance.
The Northern Forest expedition can be dangerous, and dying far from base means a long run back to recover your items. More importantly, if you accidentally pick the wrong recipe from the MAM, there's no way to undo it without reloading. Save your game before departing, save again before inserting each Hard Drive, and keep a separate backup save at a known good state. This gives you multiple restore points if anything goes wrong.
