1 Overview — The Strongest Pre-Ashlands Armor
The Carapace Armor Set is the pinnacle of protective craftsmanship in Valheim before venturing into the Ashlands biome. Introduced with the Mistlands update, this three-piece armor set provides a staggering 32 armor per piece when fully upgraded — making it the most powerful armor set obtainable through traditional crafting before the endgame content of the Ashlands. Each piece is forged from the chitinous carapace of the insectoid Seekers that infest the Mistlands, reinforced with Black Metal extracted from the treacherous Plains biome.
The journey to obtain Carapace Armor represents one of the most challenging progression arcs in the entire game. To craft even a single piece, you must first defeat The Queen — the formidable Mistlands boss who lurks deep within the infested citadels — to gain access to the Galdr Table, the advanced crafting station required for all Carapace recipes. Before that, you must conquer Yagluth in the Plains to unlock the ability to process Black Metal, and before that, defeat Bonemass in the Swamp to gain access to Iron for your initial armor upgrades. This armor is not merely equipment; it is a trophy that marks you as a Viking who has conquered every major challenge Valheim has to offer.
The Carapace set consists of three pieces: the Carapace Helmet, Carapace Chestpiece, and Carapace Leggings. When worn together, they provide a combined total of 96 armor — nearly triple the protection of the starting Leather Armor and significantly more than the Padded Armor set that preceded it. Unlike some armor sets, Carapace Armor does not grant a special set bonus, but the raw defense values more than compensate. The distinctive insectoid aesthetic — with jagged carapace plates, glowing fungal accents, and a menacing silhouette — also makes this one of the most visually striking armor sets in the game.

3 Materials & Locations
Each material listed with exact source, drop rate, biome coordinates, and farming strategy.
⚒ Carapace
Biome: Mistlands (Y-coordinate: any surface level)
Drop Rate: 1-2 Carapace per standard Seeker, 2-3 from Brutes/Soldiers
Farming Tips: Seekers respawn infinitely. Build a small outpost with a portal near a Seeker spawn cluster. Use poison-resistance meads — Seekers inflict poison. Frostner with frost damage is highly effective against them. Hunt at night when visibility is better (Seekers glow faintly in the dark mist).
⚒ Black Metal
Biome: Plains (Fuling villages, Y: 50-200)
Drop Rate: 1-3 Scrap per Fuling killed
Processing: 1 Black Metal Scrap → 1 Black Metal bar at Blast Furnace (requires Coal)
Prerequisite: Defeat Yagluth (Plains boss) to unlock Blast Furnace recipe
Farming Tips: Raid Fuling villages at dawn when patrol patterns are predictable. Bring a Blackmetal Sword or Frostner. Berserker Fulings drop more scrap. Each village contains 8-15 Fulings and respawns after several in-game days.
⚒ Mandible
Biome: Mistlands (cave entrances, infested ruins)
Drop Rate: ~15% from Ticks, guaranteed from Seeker Brutes (first kill)
Farming Tips: Ticks swarm in groups of 4-6 near infested structures. Use the Iron Sledge for AoE clears. Mandibles can also be found in Seeker "nests" — look for egg sacs on cave walls (break with pickaxe).
⚒ Scale Hide
Biome: Mistlands (deeper areas, near infested citadels)
Drop Rate: 1 per elite Seeker killed
Farming Tips: Elite Seekers are tougher than standard variants and deal significantly more damage. They are most commonly found guarding the entrances to infested citadels — the same structures that house The Queen boss. Bring high-damage weapons like Porcupine and ample healing meads.
4 Optimal Collection Route
Follow this boss-by-boss progression to efficiently unlock and craft the full Carapace Armor Set. This route assumes you are starting from Meadows with basic gear.
Step 1: Meadows to Black Forest — Bronze Age
Defeat Eikthyr (Meadows boss) → Mine Copper and Tin in Black Forest → Smelt Bronze → Craft Bronze Mace and Bronze Armor. This is your starting point. The Bronze Mace will carry you through the Swamp.
Step 2: Swamp — Iron Age
Sail to Swamp biome → Enter Sunken Crypts (need Swamp Key from Elder) → Mine Muddy Scrap Piles for Iron Scrap → Smelt into Iron → Craft Iron Armor and weapons. Defeat Bonemass (Swamp boss) to claim the Wishbone, which lets you detect Silver in Mountains and Black Metal in Plains.
Step 3: Mountains — Silver Age
Use Wishbone to find Silver veins in Mountains (Y: 100-300 altitude, frozen areas) → Smelt Silver → Craft Wolf Armor and Frostner. Wolf Armor provides frost resistance essential for Mountain survival. Defeat Moder (Dragon boss) to obtain Dragon Tears for Portal crafting.
Step 4: Plains — Black Metal Age
Sail to Plains biome → Locate Fuling villages → Use Wishbone to detect Black Metal Scrap underground → Defeat Yagluth (Plains boss) to unlock Blast Furnace recipe → Build Blast Furnace → Smelt Black Metal Scrap into bars. At this stage, craft Padded Armor as a stepping stone.
Step 5: Mistlands — The Final Push
Sail to Mistlands biome → Bring Wisplight (crafted from Silver + Yagluth drop) — the Mistlands are pitch black without it → Explore infested citadels → Locate and defeat The Queen (Mistlands boss) → This unlocks the Galdr Table recipe → Build Galdr Table → Farm Seekers for Carapace → Craft all three Carapace Armor pieces.
Step 6: Upgrading at the Workbench
Take your crafted Carapace pieces to a Workbench → Upgrade each piece to Level 5 (maximum 32 armor each) using additional Carapace and Black Metal. Full Level 5 set = 96 total armor. You are now ready for the Ashlands.
5 Gotcha Tips — Don't Waste Your Time
These mistakes will cost you hours of progress. Read this before starting your Mistlands expedition.
Many players explore the Mistlands extensively but never find the boss summoning location. The Queen requires 3 Seeker Broods placed on her altar inside an infested citadel. Without defeating her, you cannot build the Galdr Table and therefore cannot craft any Carapace piece. Find the citadel first — it is the largest structure in the biome.
The Mistlands are functionally pitch black. Without a Wisplight, you cannot navigate, spot Seekers before they aggro, or locate resources. Craft a Wisplight from 1 Silver + 1 Yagluth Thing at a Workbench. Yagluth Things drop from the Plains boss. If you skipped Yagluth, you cannot enter the Mistlands safely.
The Wishbone (from Bonemass) not only finds Silver and Black Metal — it also pulses when near hidden Carapace deposits and buried Seeker nests in the Mistlands. These hidden caches can contain 3-5 bonus Carapace each. Do not leave the Wishbone at home.
Unlike some biomes where resources are finite, Seekers respawn infinitely. The most efficient farming method is to build a small portal-connected outpost near a cluster of Seeker spawns and infested ruins. Clear the area, portal home to store loot, return and repeat. Over 3-4 cycles you will have enough Carapace for the full set.
Seeker Brutes have a devastating charge attack that can one-shot players with under 100 HP. Their poison inflicts rapid tick damage. Always carry Major Healing Meads and Poison Resistance Mead. Blocking with a Blackmetal Shield reduces the charge damage significantly.
Some players attempt to rush from Iron straight to Carapace, skipping Padded Armor entirely. This is a mistake. The Mistlands are brutally difficult even with Padded Armor (26 armor per piece). Attempting them in Iron Armor (20 armor) or less is extremely punishing. Craft Padded Armor first — the Iron and Linen Thread investment pays off massively.
Carapace itself drops plentifully from all Seeker variants. Black Metal is farmable in Plains. But Scale Hide only drops from Seeker Brutes and Seeker Soldiers — the tougher elite variants — at a rate of exactly 1 per kill. You need 4 total for the full set. Elite Seekers are most common near infested citadel entrances. Focus your farming there.
6 Free Benefits — Loot You Pick Up Along the Way
While progressing through the five biomes needed for Carapace Armor, you will pass through areas rich with valuable drops. Don't leave empty-handed.
While farming Black Metal Scrap in Plains Fuling villages: Collect Fuling Berserker Trophies for the Plains-level power surges at the Sacrificial Stones. Gather Barley and Flax from village farms — these are required to craft Linen Thread at a Spinning Wheel (used for Padded Armor and Blackmetal Sword). Fuling villages also contain chests with gold and occasionally Ymir Flesh.
While exploring Mistlands for Seekers: Gather Jotun Puffs and Magecap mushrooms — these are the Mistlands-tier food ingredients that provide massive HP and Stamina bonuses when cooked. Look for Royal Jelly in hives near Seeker nests; it is a top-tier food ingredient. The Mistlands also contain Ancient Seeds in infested chests.
At the Galdr Table (unlocked by The Queen): Carapace is also used to craft the Mistwalker sword (82 slash + 47 frost), the Carapace Bow (72 pierce), and the Carapace Shield (90 block power). If you over-farm Carapace for armor upgrades, save extras for these best-in-slot weapons.
Defeating the required bosses along the route yields permanent bonuses: Eikthyr (200 HP/Stamina), The Elder (Sunken Crypt access), Bonemass (Wishbone), Moder (Dragon Tears), Yagluth (Blast Furnace + Wisplight unlock), The Queen (Galdr Table + Mistlands power). These power surges are account-wide and benefit all future characters.
