1 Overview — Essential Mountain Survival Armor
The Wolf Armor Set is the defining equipment of the Silver Age in Valheim — the third major progression tier that transitions players from the dangers of the Swamp to the frozen peaks of the Mountain biome. This three-piece armor set provides 20 armor per piece when fully upgraded and, most critically, grants the wearer complete frost resistance when the full set is worn. Without this frost immunity, prolonged exposure to the Mountain biome's freezing temperatures will rapidly drain your health, making the Wolf Armor Set not merely useful but absolutely essential for Mountain exploration.
The journey to Wolf Armor begins in the Swamp biome, where you must defeat Bonemass — the gelatinous green monstrosity who guards the Wishbone. The Wishbone is a equippable item that emits pulses when you are near buried treasure, silver veins, and hidden underground resources. Once obtained, you must venture into the towering Mountain biome, activate the Wishbone, and listen for its telltale chiming as you traverse the snow-covered slopes. When the pulses intensify, you have found a Silver vein — a dark, obsidian-like ore deposit hidden beneath the snow and stone. Mining Silver is the first and most important step toward crafting Wolf Armor.
Beyond its practical frost resistance, the Wolf Armor Set also represents a significant aesthetic and thematic milestone. Its fur-lined plates, silver-edged pauldrons, and wolf-head helmet design give your Viking a commanding presence befitting a warrior who has conquered the frozen wastes. The set consists of three pieces: the Wolf Armor Chest (the only chestpiece with built-in frost resistance), the Wolf Armor Legs, and the Drake Helmet — a distinctive headpiece forged with both Wolf materials and Freeze Glands from the Mountain's deadly Drakes. The chestpiece itself is what provides the frost immunity, so even if you mix and match other leg and head pieces, you must wear the Wolf chest to survive the cold.

3 Materials & Locations
Each material listed with exact source, biome location, Y-coordinate depth, drop rate, and farming strategy.
⚒ Silver
Biome: Mountains (Y-coordinate: 100-300 altitude, below snow line)
Detection: Requires Wishbone (dropped by Bonemass in Swamp)
Drop Rate: ~8-12 Silver Ore per vein
Processing: Smelt Silver Ore into Silver bars at a Smelter (2 Ore = 1 bar)
Farming Tips: Equip the Wishbone and walk along Mountain slopes. When it pulses rapidly (green particles), dig downward with your pickaxe. Silver veins are always buried underground — never exposed on the surface. Bring a Hoe to level the ground and expose buried veins more easily. Each Mountain biome typically contains 3-6 Silver veins.
⚒ Wolf Pelt
Biome: Mountains (Y: 150+, primarily at night)
Drop Rate: 1 Wolf Pelt per Wolf (guaranteed)
Farming Tips: Wolves spawn in packs of 2-4 during nighttime in the Mountains. They are highly aggressive and fast — faster than player sprint speed. Never run from wolves — they will catch you. Instead, use a shield to block their initial lunge, then counter-attack with a Bronze Mace or Iron Mace. Build a small elevated platform (2-3 wood blocks high) and attack from above for a safe farming method.
⚒ Wolf Trophy
Biome: Mountains
Drop Rate: ~10% per Wolf killed
Farming Tips: You need 2 Wolf Trophies for the full set. Given the 10% drop rate, expect to kill 15-25 wolves. Starred (1-star and 2-star) wolves have a slightly higher trophy drop rate (~15% and ~20% respectively). Mark wolf spawn locations on your map and revisit them — wolves respawn every 2-3 in-game nights.
⚒ Freeze Gland
Biome: Mountains (Y: 200+ altitude, near peaks)
Drop Rate: 1 Freeze Gland per Drake (guaranteed)
Farming Tips: Drakes are ranged enemies that shoot frost projectiles. They are most dangerous when encountered alongside wolves. Use a bow with Fire Arrows or Flinthead Arrows to shoot them from a distance. Their projectiles can be dodged by strafing sideways. You only need 2 Freeze Glands for the Drake Helmet — kill 2 Drakes and you are done. Drakes commonly nest near stone towers and ruined structures at high altitude.
4 Optimal Collection Route
Follow this biome-by-biome progression to efficiently gather all materials and craft the Wolf Armor Set. This route assumes you have defeated The Elder and have access to Iron tools.
Step 1: Swamp — Defeat Bonemass for the Wishbone
Enter the Swamp biome → Use Bonemass summoning items (10 Withered Bones from Sunken Crypts) → Defeat Bonemass (recommended: Bronze Mace for blunt damage, Poison Resistance Mead) → Loot the Wishbone from his drop. The Wishbone is equippable in your utility slot. Without it, you cannot reliably find Silver.
Step 2: Mountain Preparation — What to Bring
Before entering Mountains: Craft Frost Resistance Mead (temporary cold immunity, 10 min) using Honey + Thistle + Bloodbag + Greydwarf Eye at a Fermenter. Bring a spare set — you will need them before getting Wolf Armor. Bring Iron Pickaxe (required for Silver mining). Equip the Wishbone. Bring building materials (Wood, Stone) for emergency shelter — Mountains have no natural cover and wolves hunt at night.
Step 3: Silver Mining — The Wishbone Method
Sail to a Mountain biome → Equip the Wishbone → Walk along the mountain slopes at Y: 100-300 altitude (below the highest peaks) → Listen for chiming pulses and watch for green particles emanating from your character → When pulses are rapid and intense, switch to your pickaxe and dig straight down → Mine Silver Ore from the black vein → You need approximately 120 Silver Ore (smelts to 60 Silver bars) for the full set plus upgrades.
Step 4: Wolf Hunting — Pelts and Trophies
Hunt at night in the Mountains — wolves only spawn after dark. Look for howling sounds and paw prints in the snow. Approach wolf packs with caution: use a shield to block, then counter-attack. Target 12+ Wolf Pelts and 2+ Wolf Trophies. Build a small elevated platform (2 blocks high with a ladder) for safe archery farming if melee combat is too risky. Wolves do not climb.
Step 5: Drake Hunting — Freeze Glands
Climb to the highest Mountain peaks (Y: 200+ altitude) → Locate Drake nests near ruined towers → Use a bow with Fire Arrows or Flinthead Arrows → Kill 2 Drakes for 2 Freeze Glands → Drakes shoot frost projectiles — dodge sideways, never backward. If a Drake aggros while wolves are nearby, prioritize killing the Drake first (ranged threat).
Step 6: Craft and Upgrade at the Forge
Return to your main base → Upgrade your Forge to Level 2 (requires Stone + Wood + Coal) → Smelt all Silver Ore at the Smelter → Craft Wolf Armor Chest, Wolf Armor Legs, and Drake Helmet → Upgrade each piece to Level 5 at a Workbench using additional Silver and Wolf Pelt. You now have frost immunity and 60 total armor — ready for Moder and beyond.
5 Gotcha Tips — Don't Waste Your Time
These mistakes will freeze you to death or send you back to spawn empty-handed. Read this before climbing the mountain.
The Mountain biome applies a stacking "Freezing" debuff that drains your health at approximately 2 HP per second when exposed. Without Frost Resistance Mead or Wolf Armor chestpiece, you have roughly 3-4 minutes of survival time. Always carry multiple Frost Resistance Meads as backup — they last 10 minutes each and provide full cold immunity.
If you are wet (from swimming, rain, or crossing rivers) and enter a Mountain biome, the freezing debuff stacks doubly fast. You will die in under 60 seconds. Always dry yourself by a campfire before ascending, and carry Wood to build emergency campfires if caught in a storm. The "Wet" debuff combined with "Freezing" is the number one cause of Mountain deaths.
Unlike Copper and Tin which have surface deposits, Silver never appears on the surface. You MUST use the Wishbone to find it. Walking around looking for visual cues is a waste of time. Equip the Wishbone, walk the slopes, and dig where it pulses. A common mistake is expecting Silver to look like surface ore — it does not.
Wolves run at approximately 120% of player sprint speed. You cannot outrun them on flat ground. Your only escape options are: (1) jump onto an elevated platform or rock they cannot reach, (2) enter water (wolves cannot swim well), or (3) fight with a shield and melee weapon. Running downhill into a plains biome is certain death — wolves will follow and Fulings will join the chase.
While the Bronze Mace can kill wolves, the Iron Mace (crafted with Iron from Swamp) deals significantly more damage and reduces the number of hits needed. If you have Iron available from Swamp crypts, craft an Iron Mace before Mountain expeditions. The time saved in combat is worth the Iron investment.
Stone Golems patrol the Mountains and are extremely tanky with high damage. They do NOT drop anything required for Wolf Armor. Avoid them entirely — they are a resource sink. If a Stone Golem aggros, run to water or onto terrain it cannot path to. Do not waste weapon durability on them unless you specifically need Stone for building.
Many players assume the full Wolf Armor set is needed for frost immunity. This is incorrect — only the Wolf Armor Chestpiece provides frost resistance. You can wear any helmet and leg armor with the Wolf chest and still be immune to cold. This means you can mix in the Drake Helmet (also Mountain-themed) and still be fully protected. Do not delay your Mountain exploration because you lack leg or helmet pieces.
6 Free Benefits — Loot You Pick Up Along the Way
While exploring the Mountains for Wolf Armor materials, you will pass through areas rich with valuable resources and drops. Don't leave empty-handed.
While exploring Mountain peaks: Gather Obsidian from exposed black rocks — it is required for Arrow crafting (Poison Arrows, Frost Arrows, Fire Arrows) and Tool crafting. Look for Dragon Eggs near Drake nests — these are used to summon Moder, the Mountain boss. You need 3 Dragon Eggs per summon. Moder drops Dragon Tears which unlock the Portal crafting recipe.
While hunting Drakes for Freeze Glands: Drakes also drop Freeze Glands which are a key ingredient for Frostner — one of the best weapons in Valheim (93 frost + 40 spirit damage). Collect extra Freeze Glands beyond the 2 needed for the Drake Helmet. Silver from the same trip is also used for Frostner. The Mountain biome efficiently supplies materials for both your armor and weapon upgrades simultaneously.
Silver veins are sometimes found near abandoned farms in the Mountains. These farms contain Onions and Onion Seeds — the highest-tier vegetable crop in the base game. Plant Onion Seeds in cultivated soil for a renewable source of top-tier food ingredients. Onions are used in the best food recipes including Wolf Skewer and Meat Platter.
Defeating Bonemass grants the Bonemass power (reduced physical damage taken, resistance to blunt/pierce/slash) — active for 5 minutes when invoked. The Wishbone remains useful beyond Silver hunting: it also finds buried treasure in Meadows and Black Forest, Muddy Scrap Piles in Swamp, and Black Metal Scrap in Plains. It is a permanent tool you will use for the rest of the game.
