⚒ Core Wood

Farming Tips: Core Wood only drops from the tall, straight pine trees of the Black Forest — not from the smaller beech/fir trees. You need 20 Core Wood for the base recipe plus 45 more for all upgrades (65 total). Clear a small section of pines near the Meadows border for safe farming. Be alert for Greydwarfs while chopping — they are attracted to noise and will attack while you are focused on trees.

Farming Tips: Deer are skittish and will flee if you get within ~10 meters. Use a Crude Bow with Flinthead Arrows for reliable hunting from a distance. Given the 50% drop rate, plan to hunt 15-20 deer.
⚒ Leather Scraps

Biome: Meadows
Farming Tips: Boars are abundant in the Meadows and respawn continuously. They are the easiest source of leather in the early game. You only need 2 Leather Scraps for the Stagbreaker — you likely already have dozens from normal gameplay. If running low, hunt 2-3 boars near your spawn area. Boars can also be tamed and bred in pens for an infinite leather supply.
4 Optimal Collection Route
Follow this progression to gather all Stagbreaker materials in under 30 minutes of gameplay. This route assumes you have just defeated Eikthyr.
Step 1: Eikthyr Drops and Meadows Materials
Defeat Eikthyr (summon with 2 Deer Trophies at the Sacrificial Stones) → Pick up Hard Antler (drops automatically) → Use Hard Antler to craft a Antler Pickaxe at the Workbench → While in Meadows: Hunt deer with your bow for 2+ Deer Trophies → Kill 2-3 boars for Leather Scraps (2 needed). You likely already have these materials from pre-boss exploration.
Step 2: Black Forest — Core Wood Collection
Enter the Black Forest (bordering the Meadows) → Locate tall pine trees (distinct from beech/oak) → Chop pines with your axe → Collect 20 Core Wood for the base Stagbreaker (65 for full upgrades). Build a small temporary shelter or use Eikthyr's Forsaken Power (reduced stamina running) to escape Greydwarfs if overwhelmed. Focus only on pine trees — regular wood from other trees is not needed.
Step 3: Burial Chambers — Extra Deer Trophies
While in the Black Forest: Enter Burial Chambers (stone dungeon entrances marked by glowing blue flames) → Skeletons inside have a small chance to drop Deer Trophies (~5%) → Clear chambers for Surtling Cores (needed for Smelter and Kiln), Amber, and Coins. Burial Chambers are also excellent testing grounds for your new Stagbreaker — the AoE attack demolishes groups of Skeletons.
Step 4: Craft at the Workbench
Return to your base → Upgrade Workbench to Level 2 (4 Wood + 4 Stone placed nearby) → Open crafting menu → Select Stagbreaker → Craft. If you have spare materials, upgrade to Level 2 or 3 immediately. The damage increase is significant for early Black Forest content.
Optional: Upgrade Farming for Higher Levels
To upgrade Stagbreaker to Level 4 (46 damage): Return to the Black Forest for additional Core Wood (45 more) and hunt additional deer for Deer Trophies (6 more). The Level 4 Stagbreaker competes with early Bronze weapons in raw damage output and remains viable well into the Swamp preparation phase.
5 Gotcha Tips — Don't Waste Your Time
These mistakes will slow your early-game progress or get you killed. Read this before crafting.
The Stagbreaker requires both hands to wield. You cannot use a shield while equipped. This means you lose the valuable block/parry defense that a shield provides. In one-on-one fights against tough enemies like Trolls, consider switching to a sword+shield combination. Use the Stagbreaker for its intended purpose: crowd control against groups of weaker enemies where blocking is less critical.
The Stagbreaker's slam attack damages EVERYTHING in its radius — including other players in multiplayer, tamed wolves, and even your own buildings if swung too close. Be extremely careful when fighting near your base or with allies. In co-op, coordinate with your team — the Stagbreaker user should engage groups while teammates use ranged weapons from a safe distance.
The Stagbreaker's overhead slam takes approximately 1.5 seconds to complete. During this windup, you are vulnerable to interrupts. Fast enemies like Ranged Greydwarfs can hit you before your attack lands. Learn the timing: start your swing when enemies are at maximum range — the shockwave will hit them as they approach. Against fast movers, lead with a dodge roll, then counter-slam.
Only the tall, straight pine trees in the Black Forest drop Core Wood. The smaller beech, oak, and fir trees drop regular Wood. Do not waste stamina chopping the wrong trees. Pine trees are visually distinct: taller, darker bark, no lower branches. Target 10-12 pine trees for the base recipe (you need 20 Core Wood, and each pine yields 4-6).
Deer will sprint away if you approach within ~10 meters. If you try to melee hunt them, you will spend ages chasing. Craft a Crude Bow (10 Wood + 8 Leather Scraps at Workbench) and Flinthead Arrows for reliable ranged hunting. Alternatively, use sneak (Left Ctrl) to approach from behind for a 3x backstab damage bonus. Deer have low health — any hit will likely kill them instantly.
While upgrading the Stagbreaker to Level 4 (46 damage) is tempting, remember that Bronze Mace (53 damage) and other Bronze Age weapons become available shortly after. The resources spent on Stagbreaker upgrades — especially the 6 Deer Trophies — are better saved for early Bronze tools and armor. Upgrade to Level 2 (40 damage) for minimal cost, then transition to Bronze weapons when available.
Despite being a giant hammer, the Stagbreaker cannot be used as a mining tool. It deals no damage to rocks, ore deposits, or terrain. You still need a Pickaxe (Antler Pickaxe for Copper/Tin, Bronze Pickaxe for Iron) for all mining activities. Do not attempt to use the Stagbreaker as a multi-purpose tool — it is purely a combat weapon.
6 Free Benefits — Loot You Pick Up Along the Way
While gathering Stagbreaker materials in the Meadows and Black Forest, you will collect valuable resources that accelerate your early-game progression. Don't leave empty-handed.
While hunting for Deer Trophies in Burial Chambers: Collect Surtling Cores from the smoldering red enemies inside. You need 10 Surtling Cores to build a Smelter and 5 more for a Charcoal Kiln — both essential for processing Copper and Tin ore in the Bronze Age. Burial Chambers typically contain 3-5 Surtling Cores each. Clearing 3-4 chambers gives you enough for your entire smelting operation.
While exploring Burial Chambers and Greydwarf camps: Loot Amber, Amber Pearls, Coins, and Rubies from chests and Skeleton remains. These have no crafting use but can be sold to the Trader (Haldor) for Gold — used to purchase powerful items like the Megingjord (belt that increases carry weight by 150), Ymir Flesh (for Iron Sledge), and Fishing Rod.
While chopping pine trees: Gather Thistle (glowing blue flowers, only visible at night) — required for Mead brewing including Poison Resistance Mead and Frost Resistance Mead. Collect Yellow Mushrooms from Burial Chamber walls — used for stamina meads and lighting. Both are essential for Swamp preparation and should be stockpiled early.
Defeating Eikthyr grants the Eikthyr Power — when activated at the Sacrificial Stones, it reduces stamina consumption for running and jumping by 60% for 5 minutes. This power is invaluable for early exploration, resource gathering, and escaping dangerous situations.
