1 Why the Seed Maker Unlocks Infinite Farming Wealth

🌱

Seed Maker

★★★★☆ — Turn Crops Into Seeds
Farming Level 9

The Seed Maker is the gateway to infinite crop replication in Stardew Valley. Place any crop into the Seed Maker and it produces 1-3 seeds of that crop after 20 minutes of processing. With an average yield of 2 seeds per crop, you effectively double your seed stock every cycle — turning a single Ancient Fruit into an entire greenhouse full of Ancient Fruit plants. The Seed Maker is the engine behind every endgame farming empire, and its most famous use — replicating Ancient Seeds — transforms your farm's profitability forever.

Ancient Fruit is the holy grail of Seed Maker usage. Ancient Seeds grow into Ancient Fruit plants that regrow every 7 days year-round in the Greenhouse, and each fruit processes into Ancient Fruit Wine worth 2,310g with the Artisan profession. But Ancient Seeds are incredibly rare — they come from Ancient Seed artifacts (donate to museum first) or rare drops. Once you have your first Ancient Fruit, the Seed Maker lets you turn each fruit into 1-3 more seeds, exponentially expanding your Ancient Fruit farm until every tile of your Greenhouse is producing 2,310g wine every week.

Beyond Ancient Fruit, the Seed Maker has powerful applications for rare or out-of-season crops. Turn a single Sweet Gem Berry (rare fall crop, 3,000g base value) into 1-3 seeds. Replicate expensive flower seeds like Fairy Rose or Poppy when they're out of season. And most importantly, the Seed Maker is the only way to get large quantities of seeds for crops that Pierre doesn't stock or that are prohibitively expensive.

★ What This Means for You

One Seed Maker running Ancient Fruit can theoretically produce infinite seeds. With 2 seeds per fruit on average, 1 Ancient Fruit → 2 seeds → 2 fruits → 4 seeds → 4 fruits → 8 seeds. Within a single season, a single Seed Maker can fill your entire Greenhouse with Ancient Fruit plants. Each plant produces 2,310g Artisan Wine per week — a full Greenhouse of 116 plants generates 268,000g per week with zero seed costs after the first fruit.

Skill Requirement

Farming Level 9 — The second-highest Farming skill requirement in the game (Level 10 is max). Requires 10,000 total Farming XP. The gap from Farming Level 8 (7,500 XP) to Level 9 (10,000 XP) is 2,500 XP — equivalent to harvesting 300-400 mid-tier crops. With a full Keg operation running and consistent crop harvesting, expect to reach Level 9 by late Fall of Year 1 or early Winter.

3 Materials & Sources

Each material listed with exact source, season, location, and farming tips.

⚫ Coal

Source: Break rocks in mines, kill Dust Sprites, craft in Charcoal Kiln (10 Wood → 1 Coal)
Season: Any — available year-round
Location: Every mine floor; Dust Sprites on Floors 40-79
Best Farm: Dust Sprites on Mines Floor 55 — they spawn in groups of 3-5 and each has a 50% coal drop chance. Use a burglar ring if available.
Alternative: Charcoal Kiln (10 Wood → 1 Coal) — slow but reliable. Place 5-10 Kilns and feed them wood while you do other tasks.
Tip: Coal is needed for every smelting operation in the game. By the time you need Seed Maker materials, you'll likely have 50+ coal from regular mining. If not, a single Dust Sprite run on Floor 55 nets 10-20 coal in 10 minutes.

🟡 Gold Bar

Source: Smelt 5 Gold Ore + 1 Coal in Furnace
Season: Any — available year-round
Location: Mines Floor 80-120 (abundant), Skull Cavern (every floor)
Best Floors: 100-120 have the densest gold node spawns
Alternative: Buy from Blacksmith Clint (400g each Year 2+), Fish Treasure Chests, panning spots, Clint's shop random stock
Tip: If you're already at Farming Level 9, you've almost certainly descended to Floor 100+ in the mines. 5 Gold Ore is trivial — you'll collect it passively while farming other materials. Just smelt one bar and you're done.

🪵 Wood

Source: Chop any tree with Axe
Season: Any — available year-round
Location: Your farm (trees regrow naturally), Cindersap Forest, Railroad area
Yield: 4-6 Wood per tree (more with Forester profession at Foraging Level 5)
Alternative: Robin sells Wood for 10g each (250g for 25)
Tip: 25 Wood is negligible — you'll collect this chopping a single tree cluster on your farm. The real challenge is Farming Level 9, not the materials.

🌾 Farming XP — Reaching Level 9

XP Sources: Harvesting crops (+1-8 XP based on crop value), animal care (+5 XP per pet/milk/shear), collecting animal products (+5 XP)
Level 9 Requirement: 10,000 XP total (Level 8 = 7,500 XP, Level 9 = 10,000 XP — a 2,500 XP gap)
Fastest Method: Run a full Keg operation (see our Keg guide) — process crops in Kegs while harvesting new ones. Cranberries in Fall are exceptional: each harvest gives 3-4 berries + XP, and they regrow every 5 days.
Alternative: Animals — build a Barn with 12 Cows. Pet (+5 XP) and milk (+5 XP) all 12 daily = 120 XP/day. Over 21 days = 2,520 XP, enough for the Level 8→9 gap.
Professions: Tiller (Level 5) → Artisan (Level 10). The Artisan path is universally recommended and makes all Keg/Jar products 40% more valuable.

4 Optimal Collection Route

The Seed Maker's real challenge is Farming Level 9. The materials are trivial — this route focuses on reaching Level 9 as fast as possible while preparing for Ancient Fruit replication.

① Spring Year 1 — Foundation Farming

Plant maximized crop fields starting Day 1. Parsnips (4-day growth, cheap, good early XP) → Potatoes (high sell value, chance for extra yield) → Kale/Rhubarb (if you have the Bus to Desert by Day 5-6 via Vault Bundle, Rhubarb seeds from Sandy at 100g are exceptional). Target 40+ crops planted by Day 7. Each harvest contributes to Farming XP. Descend the mines for ore but prioritize farming — the Seed Maker is a Farming tool, not a Mining tool.

② Summer Year 1 — Kegs + Hops XP Burst

Build Kegs as soon as you hit Farming Level 8 (see our Keg guide). Plant Hops on trellises — they harvest daily after 11 days and give solid XP. Plant Melons in bulk (8 XP per harvest, high value). Process everything in Kegs — the Artisan goods sell for more, and the cycle of harvest→process→sell→buy more seeds accelerates your farm growth. With 40+ crops and 5-10 Kegs running, you should reach Farming Level 8 by mid-Summer and Level 9 by late Summer or early Fall.

③ Fall Year 1 — Cranberry XP + Level 9 Push

Fall Day 1: Plant Cranberries — they are the best Farming XP crop in the game. Each plant produces 2 berries on first harvest (after 7 days), then regrows 1-2 berries every 5 days. With 40 Cranberry plants, you'll earn 80-120 berries per harvest cycle, each giving Farming XP. Continue processing in Kegs for Cranberry Wine (225g base, 315g Artisan).

If you're close to Level 9 by mid-Fall, supplement with Bok Choy (fast 4-day growth, replant frequently) or expand your animal operations. Pet every animal, collect every product. Every point of XP counts.

Get your Ancient Seed: While farming, keep an eye out for the Ancient Seed artifact (found by digging artifact spots with Hoe, killing bugs in mines, or fishing treasure chests). When you find one, donate it to Gunther at the Museum — he rewards you with plantable Ancient Seeds AND the recipe.

④ Craft Seed Maker + Start Ancient Fruit Replication

Upon reaching Farming Level 9: Craft your first Seed Maker (1 Coal + 1 Gold Bar + 25 Wood — all trivial by this point). Place it in your house or a shed.

Your first Ancient Fruit from the Greenhouse goes directly into the Seed Maker. Wait 20 minutes → collect 1-3 Ancient Seeds. Plant immediately. Repeat with every new Ancient Fruit. With average luck (2 seeds per fruit), your Ancient Fruit count doubles every growth cycle (7 days).

Pro tip: Build 3-5 Seed Makers and run them simultaneously. Queue up multiple Ancient Fruits at once — one Seed Maker processes one fruit every 20 minutes, so 5 Seed Makers process 5 fruits in parallel.

⑤ Winter Year 1 — Greenhouse Empire

With the Greenhouse unlocked (complete the Pantry Bundle at the Community Center, or buy from Joja for 35,000g), fill every available tile with Ancient Fruit. The Greenhouse has 116 plantable tiles (after accounting for sprinkler placement with Iridium Sprinklers).

Each Ancient Fruit plant produces one fruit every 7 days. Harvest → Seed Maker → plant new seeds → repeat until full. Once full, all Ancient Fruits go to Kegs for Wine production. With Artisan profession, each bottle sells for 2,310g. A full Greenhouse generates 268,000g per week in Wine alone.

5 ⚠ Gotcha Tips — Don't Waste Your Time

These mistakes will delay your Ancient Fruit empire by entire seasons. Read this before you start.

⚠ Donate your FIRST Ancient Seed artifact to the Museum

When you find an Ancient Seed artifact (the brown artifact, NOT the plantable seed), you MUST donate it to Gunther at the Museum. He will give you the plantable Ancient Seeds AND the crafting recipe to turn future Ancient Seed artifacts into plantable seeds. If you try to craft the artifact into seeds without donating first, you waste your only seed. This is the #1 mistake new players make.

⚠ Seed Maker has a 1.25% chance to produce Mixed Seeds instead

Approximately 1 in 80 Seed Maker uses produces "Mixed Seeds" instead of the target crop's seeds. For Ancient Fruit, this means losing a precious fruit with nothing to show for it. Always process more fruits than you strictly need, and never put your last Ancient Fruit into a Seed Maker without a backup.

⚠ Ancient Fruit takes a full season to mature

Ancient Fruit plants take 28 days to mature and then produce fruit every 7 days. In the Greenhouse (year-round growing), this isn't a problem. But never plant Ancient Fruit outdoors — it won't survive season changes. The Greenhouse is mandatory for Ancient Fruit farming.

⚠ Farming Level 9 is a significant grind

The gap from Level 8 to Level 9 is 2,500 XP. At ~5 XP per crop harvest, that's 500 crops. With regrowing crops (Cranberries, Hops), this accelerates significantly. But don't expect to hit Level 9 without planting 40+ crops per season and maintaining them consistently. Animal care (petting + collecting) provides a steady XP supplement.

⚠ Seed Maker works on MOST crops, not all

The Seed Maker cannot process: Blackberries, Salmonberries, Coconut, Cactus Fruit, Cave Carrot, Fiddlehead Fern, Fruit Tree fruits, Salmonberry, Spice Berry, or Wild Plum. It also cannot process Foraged items. Stick to farmed crops — Ancient Fruit, Starfruit, Melons, Cranberries, and flowers work perfectly.

⚠ Quality of input crop doesn't affect seed output

A Gold Quality Ancient Fruit and a Base Quality Ancient Fruit produce the exact same seed output. Sell your high-quality crops directly (they're worth more as-is) and use base-quality crops for the Seed Maker. The seed output probabilities are identical regardless of input quality.

6 🎁 Free Benefits — What You Get Along the Way

While pushing for Farming Level 9 and building your Seed Maker operation, you'll accumulate massive benefits across your entire farm. Don't leave these on the table.

🎁 Keg infrastructure is already built

By the time you reach Farming Level 9, you've already built Kegs (Level 8), processed crops, and established your artisan goods pipeline. The Seed Maker slots directly into this workflow: Harvest → Seed Maker (replicate) + Keg (profit). Your Keg Shed is ready — you just need the seeds to feed it.

🎁 Farming Level 10 + Artisan profession

After crafting the Seed Maker, Farming Level 10 is just 5,000 XP away. The Artisan profession (+40% to all artisan goods) transforms your economy. Ancient Fruit Wine goes from 1,650g to 2,310g. Starfruit Wine goes from 2,250g to 3,150g. Artisan is the single most impactful profession choice in the game.

🎁 Greenhouse unlocks year-round farming

Completing the Pantry Bundle (or Joja Greenhouse purchase) gives you a 10x12 tile growing space that is immune to seasons. Ancient Fruit, Coffee Beans, and fruit trees all thrive year-round. The Greenhouse is the single most valuable farm upgrade and is essential for Seed Maker strategies.

🎁 Museum rewards from artifact hunting

While searching for Ancient Seed artifacts (digging worm spots, fishing treasure, killing mine bugs), you'll find dozens of other artifacts and minerals. Donating them to Gunther unlocks unique rewards: the Rusty Key (access to Sewers), Stardrop (permanent energy increase), and rare crafting recipes. Complete the museum for a special reward from Gunther.

🎁 Seed Maker has other powerful uses

Beyond Ancient Fruit, the Seed Maker excels at: Sweet Gem Berry replication (rare Fall crop, 3,000g base value), Flower seed production (Fairy Rose, Poppy for Honey), and out-of-season crop replication (plant Summer crops in the Greenhouse during Winter by making seeds from stored crops).

🎁 Seed Maker materials are needed for other recipes

The Coal and Gold Bar you collect are also used for: Quality Sprinklers (1 Iron + 1 Gold + 1 Refined Quartz), Iridium Sprinklers (1 Battery + 1 Iridium + 1 Gold), and dozens of other crafting recipes. Gold Bars are one of the most versatile crafting materials in the game — stockpile extra.
