Rathalos Armor Set
Overview
The Rathalos Armor Set is your first truly game-changing full armor set in Monster Hunter Wilds. Featuring Attack Boost Lv.3, substantial Fire Resistance, and the iconic crimson winged appearance, this set marks your transition from early-game scrubs to a mid-game threat.
Not only does it dramatically boost your raw damage output, but the fire resistance makes subsequent Rathalos hunts and other fire-based monsters significantly more manageable. The signature red-wing look is one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the entire Monster Hunter franchise.

Materials
Your bread-and-butter material. You’ll get plenty of these naturally while hunting for the Plate.
Breaking the back guarantees Shell drops. Aim for it every hunt.
Target both wings. Using a weapon with wide attacks (Long Sword, Switch Axe) helps.
High carve rate, but you need a cutting weapon to sever. Bring a blade if main is blunt.
The bottleneck. Expect 15–25 hunts on average. Use Investigation Quests with gold rewards to speed this up.
HR exclusive. Low Rank Rathalos will never drop this. Progress story to unlock HR.
Found in volcanic/Elder’s Recess mining nodes. Bring Geologist Lv.3 for extra drops.
Common ore available on all maps. You probably already have a stockpile.
Optimal Route
Learn Rathalos Attack Patterns
Bring Flash Pods ×3 and Pitfall Trap + Shock Trap. Rathalos spends a lot of time airborne — flash him out of the sky for free damage windows. Learn his tell before the 180-degree fire sweep.
Targeted Part Breaks
Priority: Head → Back → Wings. Head breaks give extra Shell chances. Back break is guaranteed Shell. Both wing breaks drop Webbing. Use Partbreaker Lv.3 if available.
Plate Grind (5% Drop Rate)
Expect 15–25 hunts on average. Speed this up by:
- Using Investigation Quests with gold/silver reward boxes
- Wearing Legiana Blessing (Good Luck) for extra rewards
- Breaking every possible part for more reward rolls
Mine on the Side
While running Rathalos hunts, hit every mining node on your route. Firestone and Machalite will come naturally — no need to dedicated farm.
Forging
Once you have the Plate and all other materials, head to the Smithy. Craft each piece individually: Head → Chest → Arms → Waist → Legs.
Gotcha Tips
⚠️ Plate is Pure RNG Torture
At 5%, the Plate is the single biggest bottleneck. Don’t burn out — mix in other hunts and come back. Investigation quests with 3+ gold boxes dramatically improve your odds.
⚠️ Marrow Requires High Rank
Rathalos Marrow does not drop from Low Rank Rathalos. You must progress the story to unlock High Rank quests. Don’t waste time grinding LR expecting Marrow.
⚠️ Never Sell Materials Early
That stack of 47 Rathalos Scales? You’ll need 12 just for this set, plus more for weapon upgrades. Keep everything until you’ve crafted everything you want.
⚠️ Blade/Gunner Are Different Sets
Blademaster and Gunner armor are separate crafts with different material requirements. Make sure you’re crafting the correct set for your weapon type.
⚠️ Fire Resist is Situational
Great against Rathalos, Teostra, and Lavasioth. Useless against ice or water monsters. This is a specialized set — don’t expect it to carry you everywhere.

Rath Wingtalon
Breaking wings also drops Wingtalons — needed for multiple weapon upgrade trees. Stock up while farming Webbing.
Monster Bone+
Rathalos quest rewards frequently include Monster Bone+, a staple material for dozens of mid-tier crafts.
Ancient Forest Gathering
Rathalos spawns in Ancient Forest. While running hunts, grab herbs, mushrooms, and ore nodes along your path.
Elder Dragon Skill Practice
Rathalos teaches aerial combat, fire dodging, and part-break prioritization — all essential skills for Elder Dragon fights ahead.
Investigation Quest Rewards
Farming Rathalos generates tons of Investigations. Complete them for extra reward boxes, zenny, and research points.
