Firework Rocket (Flight Duration 3)
Elytra fuel for sustained flight. Paper + 3 Gunpowder = 3-second flight. Build a creeper farm for unlimited gunpowder.
Why This Item Matters
The Firework Rocket is the difference between owning Elytra and actually using Elytra. Without rockets, the Elytra is a glider — you jump, you fall, you land. With Flight Duration 3 rockets, the Elytra becomes true flight: climb, cruise, dive, and climb again. Infinite mobility across your entire world.
Here is what Firework Rockets unlock when paired with Elytra:
| Capability | Without Rockets | With Flight 3 Rockets |
|---|---|---|
| Altitude Control | Only descent. You lose height constantly. | Gain altitude on demand. Fly indefinitely. |
| Travel Speed | ~30 blocks/sec (glide only) | ~50-75 blocks/sec (rocket-boosted) |
| Cross-Map Travel | Impossible for long distances. | 10,000+ blocks on a single stack. |
| Exploration | Ground-level only. Slow and dangerous. | Aerial scouting. See structures from above. |
| Nether Roof Travel | Not possible. | Fastest travel method in the game. |
| Elytra Combat | Limited to dives. | Strafing, retreating, aerial advantage. |
The math on rocket consumption is critical to understand. A single Flight Duration 3 rocket provides 3 seconds of thrust. When flying efficiently (level flight, minimal climbing), you use approximately 1 rocket every 6-8 seconds. A 2,000-block journey at 50 blocks/sec takes ~40 seconds of flight time, consuming roughly 5-7 rockets. But aggressive climbing and high-speed flight can burn through a stack of 64 in minutes.
🎯 The FOMO Angle
Every player who has beaten the Ender Dragon and found Elytra has had this moment: the first exhilarating glide… followed by the crushing realization that you are slowly sinking toward the ground with no way to climb. Without Firework Rockets, Elytra is a toy. With them, it is the single most powerful mobility tool in Minecraft. The only limiting factor is how many rockets you can craft — which is why you need a Creeper farm.
Flight Duration Tiers Explained
The number of Gunpowder items in the crafting recipe determines the Flight Duration:
| Gunpowder Used | Flight Duration | Thrust Time | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Gunpowder | Flight 1 | 1 second | Minimal. Too short for practical use. |
| 2 Gunpowder | Flight 2 | 2 seconds | Acceptable if low on gunpowder. Half the range. |
| 3 Gunpowder | Flight 3 | 3 seconds | MAXIMUM. The standard for all Elytra flight. |
Flight Duration 3 is the maximum. Adding more than 3 Gunpowder does nothing — the recipe caps at 3. There is no reason to ever craft Flight 1 or Flight 2 rockets for Elytra use, unless you are genuinely desperate for gunpowder.
Crafting Recipe
The Firework Rocket recipe is straightforward, but the quantities you need are enormous. Plan for bulk production from the start.

Bulk Production Math
| Target | Rockets | Paper Needed | Sugar Cane Needed | Gunpowder Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter batch | 64 (1 stack) | ~22 Paper | 66 Sugar Cane | ~64 Gunpowder |
| Practical flight session | 128-192 (2-3 stacks) | ~43-64 Paper | 129-192 Sugar Cane | 128-192 Gunpowder |
| Major expedition | 320 (5 stacks) | ~107 Paper | 321 Sugar Cane | ~320 Gunpowder |
For context, a single Creeper drops 0-2 Gunpowder (up to 5 with Looting III). Without a farm, killing 64 Creepers manually is a full night of hunting. With a Creeper farm, you can AFK-collect multiple stacks per hour. The farm is not optional for serious Elytra use — it is mandatory.
⚠️ NEVER ADD FIREWORK STARS FOR ELYTRA ROCKETS
If you add a Firework Star (crafted from Gunpowder + Dye + optional materials) to the rocket recipe, the rocket becomes EXPLOSIVE. When used with Elytra, explosive rockets deal damage to YOU — up to 8 hearts depending on the star ingredients. This is the #1 cause of Elytra-related deaths. For flight fuel, ONLY use Paper + Gunpowder. No stars. No dye. No extra effects. Plain rockets only.

| Witch | 0-6 | 1-7 | 1-8 | 1-9 | Yes — Witch hut farms |
Creepers are the best source because they are the easiest to farm in large numbers. A well-built cat-based Creeper farm produces 200-600+ gunpowder per hour while you stand AFK. Witch farms are more complex to build (require finding a Witch Hut). Ghast farms are niche and dangerous.
Optimal Route
This route covers everything from building your first Sugar Cane farm to stockpiling rockets for major Elytra expeditions. Total time for initial batch: 1-2 hours. With an operational Creeper farm, restocking takes 30 minutes.
Build a Sugar Cane Farm
⏱ 20-30 minutes setupFind a river, lake, or ocean shore. Plant Sugar Cane on dirt, sand, or grass blocks directly adjacent to water source blocks. Create rows of cane with water channels between them. Each cane plant grows to 3 blocks tall — harvest the top 2 blocks and leave the bottom to regrow. A 20-plant farm yields enough Sugar Cane for a stack of rockets per harvest cycle.
Build a Creeper Farm (Cat-Based Design)
⏱ 45-90 minutes setupThis is the single best investment you can make for Elytra flight. The cat-based design uses Creepers' fear of cats to funnel them into a killing chamber. Core concept: Creepers spawn on a large platform, detect a tamed cat at one end, flee from it, and are pushed by water streams into a drop chute. The fall kills them, and hoppers collect the gunpowder.
Materials needed for basic design:
- 2-3 stacks of building blocks (cobblestone, dirt, or stone)
- 1-2 stacks of trapdoors (wooden or iron)
- 2-4 water buckets
- 8-16 hoppers + 2 chests
- 1 tamed Cat (tame an Ocelot or find a stray village cat with raw cod/salmon)
- Torches or carpets to prevent other mob spawns (spiders need 2×2, so use carpets)
Farm location: Build over an ocean or river for maximum spawn rates (no land mobs competing for spawn cap). The spawning platform should be at Y=200+ with the collection chest at your AFK spot 128 blocks below so only the platform is in spawn range.
AFK at the Creeper Farm & Collect Gunpowder
⏱ 30-60 minutes AFKStand at your AFK spot 128 blocks below the spawning platform. The farm will automatically spawn Creepers, scare them toward the cat, funnel them into the drop chute, and collect their drops. A basic cat-based farm produces 100-300 gunpowder per hour. An optimized design (larger platform, better water flow, spawn-proofed surroundings) can produce 500-800+ per hour.
Craft Paper from Sugar Cane
⏱ 5 minutesTake your harvested Sugar Cane to a crafting table. Place 3 Sugar Cane in any row to craft 3 Paper. For 3 stacks of rockets (192 rockets), you need 64 Paper, which requires 192 Sugar Cane. If your farm isn't large enough yet, do a second harvest cycle — Sugar Cane regrows in 10-15 minutes.
Craft Firework Rockets (Flight Duration 3)
⏱ 5 minutesOpen a crafting table. Place 1 Paper + 3 Gunpowder in any slots (shapeless recipe). Each craft produces 3 rockets. For bulk crafting, fill your inventory with the ingredients and shift-click the output repeatedly. Store completed rockets in a dedicated chest near your Elytra takeoff point.
Stockpile 3-5 Stacks Before Major Flight
⏱ OngoingBefore any major Elytra expedition ( Nether roof travel, End City raiding, cross-map exploration), stockpile at least 3-5 stacks (192-320 rockets). Running out of fuel mid-flight means a slow, uncontrolled glide to the ground — potentially fatal if you're over lava, void, or an ocean. Keep a backup stack in your Ender Chest for emergencies.
📈 Time Summary
Gotcha Tips
Firework Rockets seem simple, but there are critical mechanics that can ruin your day — or kill you. Every warning below is from hard-won player experience.
Firework Stars Make Rockets EXPLOSIVE — And Deadly
This is the #1 cause of Elytra death. If you add a Firework Star (Gunpowder + Dye + optional ingredients like diamond, glowstone dust, or fire charge) to your rocket recipe, the rocket becomes explosive. When used to boost Elytra flight, the explosion deals damage directly to YOU.
Damage scales with the star's ingredients:
- Small Ball (gunpowder + dye): ~2 hearts damage
- Large Ball (gunpowder + dye + fire charge): ~3 hearts damage
- Star-Shaped (gunpowder + dye + gold nugget): ~3 hearts damage
- Creeper-Shaped (gunpowder + dye + head): ~3.5 hearts damage
- Burst (gunpowder + dye + feather): ~2 hearts damage
ONLY craft Paper + Gunpowder for Elytra fuel. No dye. No fire charge. No extra ingredients. If your rockets have any "effects" or "explosion" listed in the tooltip, they will hurt you.
Creepers Only Spawn at Light Level 0
As of Minecraft 1.18, Creepers (and all hostile Overworld mobs) only spawn at light level 0. This means you can completely control where Creepers spawn by managing light levels. For your Creeper farm:
- The spawning platform must be at light level 0 everywhere you want spawns
- Every surface within 128 blocks of your AFK spot must be spawn-proofed (lit to light level 1+, slabbed, or flooded) to force ALL spawns onto your platform
- Building over an ocean or river eliminates the need to spawn-proof land
If your farm's spawn rates are low, check light levels with F3. Even a single torch on the platform will prevent spawns in a large radius.
Cat-Based Farm Requirements
A functional cat-based Creeper farm requires specific components:
- A tamed cat — tame an Ocelot with raw cod/salmon, or find a stray cat in a village. The cat must be tamed (sits when right-clicked and follows you). Untamed cats do NOT scare Creepers.
- Trapdoors — place trapdoors at floor edges. Creepers treat trapdoors as solid blocks and will walk over them, falling through the open gap.
- 5+ block drop — Creepers have 20 health (10 hearts). A fall of 23+ blocks is instantly fatal. A fall of 5-10 blocks weakens them for a one-hit kill. For an XP farm, use a shorter fall. For AFK gunpowder, use a lethal drop.
- Water streams — use flowing water to push Creepers toward the drop chute. Place water source blocks at the edges of the platform.
- Carpets to block spiders — spiders need a 2×2 space to spawn. Place carpets to break up 2×2 areas.
Manual Creeper Hunting Is Slow and Dangerous
Without a farm, you'll be hunting Creepers manually at night. The problems:
- Creepers are silent — they make no footstep sounds
- They spawn mixed with Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, and Endermen
- Each Creeper drops only 0-2 gunpowder (0-5 with Looting III)
- Night is only 10 minutes — you get maybe 20-30 kills per night
- Unexpected Creeper explosions destroy your gear
If you must hunt manually, the best strategy is to find a flat area (desert or plains), wait for night, and use a Looting III sword. But seriously — build the farm. It pays for itself in one session.
Wandering Traders Sell Gunpowder (Unreliable)
Wandering Traders sometimes offer gunpowder in exchange for emeralds, but their trades are randomized and they despawn after 40-60 minutes. Do NOT rely on Wandering Traders for your gunpowder supply. They are an emergency stopgap at best.
Never Use Explosive Rockets for Elytra Flight
We said it before, we'll say it again. Explosive Firework Rockets deal self-damage when used with Elytra. At high altitude, taking 3-8 hearts of unexpected damage can send you plummeting to your death. The explosion also knocks you off-course mid-flight. There is ZERO reason to use explosive rockets for travel. Use plain Paper + Gunpowder rockets exclusively.
Flight Duration Is Capped at 3
Adding more than 3 Gunpowder to a rocket recipe does nothing. The game reads the gunpowder count, caps it at 3, and assigns Flight Duration 3. Do not waste gunpowder by adding extra. The recipe is strictly: 1 Paper + 3 Gunpowder = 3 Flight Duration 3 rockets.

Free Benefits
Building a Firework Rocket production pipeline delivers far more than just Elytra fuel. Here's everything you get "for free" along the way:
Unlimited Gunpowder for TNT
Your Creeper farm produces gunpowder — and gunpowder is also the key ingredient for TNT (5 Gunpowder + 4 Sand). With a steady gunpowder supply, you can mass-produce TNT for mining, demolition, or PvP. A single hour at an optimal Creeper farm yields enough gunpowder for 100+ TNT blocks. Strip mining Ancient Debris at Y=-59 becomes trivial when you can blast through Netherrack in seconds.
Music Discs from Skeleton-Creeper Kills
If you design your Creeper farm with a Skeleton in the killing chamber, any Creeper killed by the Skeleton's arrow drops a Music Disc (random: 13, cat, blocks, chirp, far, mall, mellohi, stal, strad, ward, wait, otherside, 5, or pigstep). This is the ONLY way to obtain most music discs in Survival. A well-designed farm can produce multiple discs per hour.
Unlimited Paper for Books & Maps
Your Sugar Cane farm produces Sugar Cane, which crafts into Paper. Paper is essential for Books (3 paper + 1 leather = Book), which you need for Enchanting Tables and Bookshelves. It's also used for Maps (8 paper + Compass = Empty Map) and Cartography (zooming and cloning maps). A large Sugar Cane farm enables you to map your entire world and build a full Level 30 enchanting room with ease.
True Flight: Fast Travel Across Your Entire World
The Elytra + Rocket combo is the fastest travel method in Minecraft. A skilled pilot can travel 10,000+ blocks on a single stack of rockets. This unlocks:
- Fast exploration of distant biomes (find rare ones like Mushroom Fields, Ice Spikes, Badlands)
- Rapid location of structures (Villages, Desert Temples, Jungle Temples, Ocean Monuments)
- Scout terrain from above for base building locations
- Nether Roof travel: Build a portal at your destination, fly on the Nether roof at 8:1 scale
- Emergency escape from dangerous situations (Ender Dragon, Wither, Raid)
Nether Roof Highway System
With Elytra and rockets, you can fly on top of the Nether bedrock roof (Y=128). In the Nether, 1 block traveled = 8 blocks in the Overworld. This means a 1,250-block flight on the Nether roof equals 10,000 blocks of Overworld distance. Build ice highways or simply fly roof-level to link all your bases, farms, and points of interest. This is how serious players connect their worlds.
Elytra Flight Skill Development
Regular rocket-powered flight trains you in Elytra controls — skills that transfer to combat, exploration, and survival:
- Look up to climb (consumes more rockets, slower forward speed)
- Look level for maximum distance efficiency (best rocket-to-distance ratio)
- Look down to dive and build speed (up to ~75 blocks/sec)
- Firework timing — fire just before losing momentum for smooth, efficient flight
- Emergency landing — water bucket MLG, Slow Falling potions, or็็ ไผ ้
Creeper Farm = General Mob Farm Knowledge
Building a Creeper farm teaches you the fundamentals of mob farming in Minecraft: spawn platforms, water funneling, drop chutes, spawn-proofing, AFK spot positioning, and hopper collection systems. These skills transfer directly to building Zombie, Skeleton, Spider, Enderman, Guardian, and Raid farms. The Creeper farm is the gateway to Minecraft's massive automation ecosystem.
Sugar for Brewing & Baking
Sugar Cane also crafts into Sugar, which is used for Cake, Pumpkin Pie, and Fermented Spider Eyes (for brewing weakness, slowness, invisibility, and harming potions). Your Sugar Cane farm thus supports both your flight fuel AND your potion brewing operations. A single farm serving multiple purposes is the hallmark of efficient Minecraft base design.
🎁 Bottom Line
By the time you've built your Creeper farm and stockpiled your first stacks of Flight 3 rockets, you will have: unlimited gunpowder for TNT and rockets, a renewable Sugar Cane farm serving paper, books, maps, and sugar needs, the ability to fly across your entire world in minutes, access to the Nether roof highway system (8:1 travel speed), a potential music disc collection from skeleton-creeper kills, permanent Elytra piloting skills, and the mob farm building knowledge to construct any farm in the game. Firework Rockets are not just fuel — they are the foundation of late-game mobility and the skills that let you build anything.
