The House of Hope and the Helldusk Armor are only accessible in Act 3. You must have progressed the main story to the point where you have arrived in the city of Baldur's Gate and have had your first encounter with Raphael at Sharess' Caress. This typically occurs after completing the events at Moonrise Towers and the Shadow-Cursed Lands in Act 2.
😈 Prerequisite: Invitation to the House of Hope
You must obtain an invitation to enter the House of Hope. This is granted through the "Deal with the Devil" quest line. Speak with Raphael at Sharess' Caress (coordinates X:20, Y:-50 in the Lower City) and agree to his proposal. He will give you the Infernal Contract and a means to travel to his domain. Alternative: If you refused his deal earlier, you may need to use the Helm of Devilish Decadence or find another way to access the portal.
😈 Required: Accept the Contract (or Bypass It)
Signing the contract gives you free entry to the House of Hope. However, you can also refuse the contract and still enter by finding the hidden portal in the Lower City. Look for the House of Hope Portal near the eastern docks (coordinates approximately X:80, Y:-110). You will need to pass an Arcana check (DC 15) to activate it. If you signed the contract, you can use the portal freely. If you refused, you may face additional challenges inside.
😈 Recommended: High Stealth Party Members
For the heist route, bring characters with high Stealth scores — ideally Rogue (Astarion) or any character with Expertise in Stealth. The House of Hope is patrolled by Helldusk Cultists, Imps, and other devilish entities with high Perception scores. A character with at least +8 to Stealth is recommended for consistent success.

Spells or items that grant invisibility — such as Invisibility (Level 2 Illusion), Potion of Invisibility, or the Cloak of the Bat — are invaluable for bypassing guards and security systems within the House of Hope. Multiple sections of the heist are dramatically easier with invisibility active.
😈 Recommended: High-Persuasion Character
Several dialogue checks within the House of Hope require high Persuasion, Deception, or Intimidation. A Bard, Warlock, or Paladin with +10 or higher in these skills will have significantly more options for talking past guards and servants. This is especially useful for the encounters with the Archivist and Haarlep.

If fighting Raphael, bring fire resistance potions or gear that grants fire resistance. Spells like Protection from Energy (Fire) or items like the Ring of Fire Resistance will dramatically increase survivability. Raphael is designed for high-level parties. Attempting this fight below Level 11 is extremely difficult unless you are using specific cheese strategies or have optimized builds. The fight scales with your level, but the baseline difficulty assumes a well-geared Act 3 party at level 11 or higher.

5 Gotcha Tips
⚠️ PICKPOCKETING RAPHAEL DOES NOT WORK
