1 Overview
The Silver Sword of the Astral Plane is one of the most narratively significant and mechanically powerful weapons in Baldur's Gate 3. This legendary greatsword deals 1d10+3 slashing damage and grants advantage on attack rolls against intellect devourers and other aberrations — a bonus that proves devastatingly effective in several key Act 3 encounters. But beyond its raw statistics, this weapon represents the culmination of Lae'zel's entire character arc, the resolution of the githyanki-illithid conflict that has defined her story since Act 1, and a critical turning point in the fight against the Absolute.
The Silver Sword is deeply tied to githyanki lore. These weapons are forged in the Astral Plane by githyanki smiths using techniques passed down through centuries of warfare against the illithid (mind flayer) oppressors. A Silver Sword is not merely a weapon — it is a symbol of githyanki identity, a sacred artifact that only the most honored warriors are permitted to wield. In githyanki culture, losing a Silver Sword is considered one of the greatest possible shames, and recovering a lost blade is a quest of supreme importance. This cultural context is essential to understanding why Lae'zel's quest to obtain this weapon is so deeply personal and emotionally charged.
In mechanical terms, the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane is a two-handed greatsword with the versatile property (can be used one-handed for 1d8+3). Its 1d10+3 slashing damage puts it among the highest base-damage weapons in the game, competing with the Balduran's Giantslayer and the Sword of Chaos. The advantage against intellect devourers is deceptively powerful — intellect devourers appear in several major Act 3 encounters including the Mind Flayer Colony revisit, the Iron Throne prison sequence, and the final confrontation with the Netherbrain, where they serve as elite guard units. Against these enemies, the Silver Sword effectively has a +5 to +7 bonus to hit, making it one of the most consistent damage dealers in endgame content.
The Silver Sword also possesses a unique weapon action called Astral Edge, which can be activated once per short rest. This ability surrounds the blade with astral energy for 3 rounds, adding 1d6 force damage to each attack and causing the weapon to ignore resistance to slashing damage. When combined with Great Weapon Master feats, Action Surge, and damage-boosting spells like Haste or Hex, the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane can output damage that rivals even the most optimized spellcaster builds. For Fighter, Barbarian, or Paladin characters, this weapon is arguably the best greatsword in the game.

2 Acquisition Method
The Silver Sword of the Astral Plane is obtained through Lae'zel's companion quest chain, which spans all three acts of the game and culminates in a series of critical decisions in Act 3. The quest is called "The Githyanki Warrior" and involves Lae'zel's struggle with her people's expectations, her relationship with the githyanki prince Orpheus, and her ultimate choice between loyalty to her people and loyalty to her newfound family — the player party.
The Companion Quest Chain
The path to the Silver Sword requires completing every stage of Lae'zel's personal quest. This is not a simple fetch quest — it is a deeply narrative-driven experience with major consequences for Lae'zel's character development and the game's ending. The quest has multiple branching paths, but only one specific path leads to the Silver Sword reward.
Critical Choice: Voss's Proposal
In Act 3, after reaching the Lower City of Baldur's Gate, you will encounter a githyanki squad led by Kith'rak Voss — a high-ranking githyanki warrior who has been pursuing Lae'zel since Act 1. Voss reveals critical information: Prince Orpheus, the legendary githyanki leader who was thought dead, is actually imprisoned by the Chosen Three (the Act 3 main villains). Voss proposes an alliance to free Orpheus and use his power to defeat the Absolute.
The Path to the Silver Sword
To obtain the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane, you MUST follow Voss's proposal and commit to freeing Prince Orpheus. This involves a series of specific choices: first, you must agree to Voss's alliance when he approaches you at the Sewer Entrance (coordinates X:-190, Y:65). Second, you must convince Lae'zel to trust Voss rather than attacking him — this requires a Persuasion check (DC 18) or having high enough approval with Lae'zel (above 40). Third, you must progress through the main story to reach the Astral Prison where Orpheus is held, which is accessed through the Mind Flayer Colony after the Iron Throne sequence.
Orpheus's Reward
Upon freeing Prince Orpheus from the Astral Prison and completing the dialogue sequence with him, the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane is bestowed upon Lae'zel (and by extension, your party) as a symbol of githyanki honor restored. Orpheus personally hands the blade to Lae'zel in a cutscene that plays differently depending on whether Lae'zel chose to become a kith'rak (githyanki warlord) or to forge her own path. In both cases, the Silver Sword is granted, but the dialogue and emotional weight of the scene vary significantly.

4 Step-by-Step Route
This is the complete quest chain from Act 1 through Act 3 that leads to the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane. Critical choices that must be made correctly are highlighted in bold.
→ Recruit Lae'zel at the Ravaged Beach (she is trapped in a mind flayer pod)
→ Keep her in your active party for all major story events
→ At the Mountain Pass, encounter Kith'rak Voss (githyanki patrol)
→ CRITICAL: Do NOT attack Voss — use diplomacy or deception
→ Complete Act 1 and travel to the Shadow-Cursed Lands
ACT 2 — Development:
→ At Moonrise Towers, encounter more githyanki forces
→ Speak with Lae'zel after each major event — build her approval above 40
→ Choices that increase Lae'zel's approval: supporting strength, combat prowess, githyanki culture
→ Choices that decrease Lae'zel's approval: showing weakness, allying with illithids, being merciful to enemies
→ Complete Act 2 and arrive in Baldur's Gate (Act 3)
ACT 3 — The Critical Chain:
→ Enter the Lower City of Baldur's Gate
→ Progress the main story until the Steel Watch quest triggers
→ Navigate to the Sewer Entrance (X:-190, Y:65)
→ CRITICAL ENCOUNTER: Kith'rak Voss appears
Voss Dialogue Sequence:
→ "I'm listening" (not hostile)
→ Hear his proposal about Orpheus
→ "I'll help free Orpheus" — accept the alliance
→ Lae'zel reacts — Persuade her (DC 18) or have 40+ approval
→ Voss gives you the Astral Prism Key
The Iron Throne & Mind Flayer Colony:
→ Progress the main story to the Iron Throne prison sequence
→ Rescue the Gondian prisoners (combat-heavy underwater sequence)
→ Continue to the Mind Flayer Colony (accessed through the Iron Throne)
→ Navigate the colony — defeat mind flayers and intellect devourers
→ Reach the deepest section and locate the Astral Prison portal
The Emperor's Test:
→ The Emperor confronts you before the portal
→ He argues that Orpheus should stay imprisoned
→ CRITICAL: Reject the Emperor's proposal
→ Select: "Orpheus deserves his freedom"
→ If you have high approval with the Emperor, you may need to pass an Intimidation check (DC 20)
Freeing Orpheus:
→ Enter the Astral Prison through the portal
→ Speak with Prince Orpheus — complete the full dialogue tree
→ Choose to release him from his astral chains
→ Orpheus is freed — cutscene triggers
→ RECEIVE: Silver Sword of the Astral Plane (Legendary Greatsword)
→ Orpheus joins as a temporary ally for the final battle
Alternative: Lae'zel's Kith'rak Path
If Lae'zel embraces her githyanki heritage and chooses to become a kith'rak (warlord) during her personal quest, the Silver Sword is granted with additional dialogue about leadership and honor. The weapon's stats are identical regardless of which path Lae'zel takes — the difference is purely narrative. The kith'rak path requires consistently pro-githyanki choices throughout all three acts, including killing the dream visitor when prompted and refusing to show mercy to illithid enemies.
5 Gotcha Tips
Lae'zel needs to be in your active party (the four characters you're controlling) for the Voss encounter, the Emperor confrontation, and the Orpheus dialogue. If she is at camp during any of these moments, quest flags may fail to fire and the Silver Sword will not be granted. Always have her with you when approaching the Sewer Entrance and the Mind Flayer Colony.
If you choose to side with the Emperor and keep Orpheus imprisoned, the Silver Sword quest fails permanently. There is no way to recover from this decision in the same playthrough. The Emperor will offer an alternative reward (the Crown of the Absolute), but this is inferior to the Silver Sword for martial builds. Save before the Emperor confrontation so you can reload if you make the wrong choice.
If you attacked and killed Kith'rak Voss during the Mountain Pass encounter in Act 1, he will not appear in Act 3 to offer the alliance. Without Voss, the Orpheus quest cannot be initiated, and the Silver Sword is unobtainable. If Voss is dead, your only recourse is to use a mod, console commands, or start a new playthrough. Always spare Voss if you want the Silver Sword.
Lae'zel has some of the most demanding approval requirements of any companion. She values strength, combat prowess, githyanki culture, and directness. She despises weakness, mercy toward enemies, and deference to authority. To reach 40+ approval, consistently choose aggressive dialogue options, volunteer for combat challenges, and support her githyanki identity. Completing her personal quest steps (like consuming mind flayer tadpoles) also grants significant approval.
While any character with greatsword proficiency can equip the Silver Sword, it is thematically bound to Lae'zel and she has unique voiced dialogue when wielding it. If you give the sword to another character, you miss these unique interactions. Mechanically, Lae'zel is also one of the best users of the weapon due to her high Strength, Fighter levels, and synergy with the githyanki racial features.
When you free Orpheus from the Astral Prison, a combat encounter triggers immediately against mind flayer guards. If Orpheus dies during this fight (he has low HP when first freed), the quest may fail and the Silver Sword will not be granted. Protect Orpheus at all costs during the escape sequence — use protective spells like Shield of Faith, Aid, or Bless on him immediately.
The Astral Edge weapon action's bonus force damage does not stack with Hex's bonus necrotic damage — you get whichever is higher, not both. However, Astral Edge DOES stack with Great Weapon Master, Divine Smite, and superiority dice. For maximum burst damage, activate Astral Edge + Great Weapon Master + Action Surge for 6 attacks in one round, each dealing 1d10+3+1d6+10 (GWM) slashing/force damage.
After receiving the Silver Sword, it is possible to later betray Orpheus and re-imprison him (certain dialogue options at the camp). Doing this does NOT remove the Silver Sword from your inventory, but it does disable the Astral Edge weapon action permanently. The sword reverts to a standard +3 greatsword without its special ability. Do not betray Orpheus if you want to keep the full functionality of the weapon.

Narrative Benefits
The Orpheus questline is one of the most narratively rich sequences in Baldur's Gate 3. Freeing Orpheus fundamentally changes the dynamics of the final battle — he joins as a Level 14 Fighter with unique githyanki abilities including psionic strikes and astral teleportation. His presence also unlocks unique dialogue with the Netherbrain and the Chosen Three, as Orpheus has personal history with several of the antagonists.
Additionally, the choice to free Orpheus over the Emperor's objections is a major turning point in the main story. It demonstrates that your party values freedom and justice over convenience and power — a theme that resonates through the game's ending sequences. The epilogue slide for this choice shows Orpheus leading the githyanki in a new war against the remaining illithid strongholds, with Lae'zel at his side if she chose the kith'rak path.
